Kenia ist nach Sri Lanka Tee-Exportweltmeister
Ganz auf den internationalen Markt ausgerichtet ist der Tee-Anbau in Kenia.
Kenia erzeugte 2006 310.607 Tonnen Tee, die nahezu komplett auf den internationalen Markt gebracht wurden. Nur in China und Indien wird noch mehr Tee angebaut, welcher in diesen Ländern jedoch stärker selbst konsumiert wird. In Sri Lanka wird in etwa gleich viel produziert und somit ist Sri Lanka knapp vor Kenia der wichtigste Tee-Exporteur der Welt. In Kenia sind in den letzten vier Jahrzehnten Anbaufläche, Ernte und Exportmenge von Tee sprunghaft angestiegen. Heute ist Tee ein bedeutender Wirtschaftsfaktor und einer der wichtigsten Exportgüter des Landes. Kenia-Tee stammt aus den Distrikten Kericho, Nandi, Limuru-Kiambu, Nyeri und Meru und wird vornehmlich nach der CTC-Methode verarbeitet. Auch Deutschland bezieht zunehmend Tee aus Kenia, der überwiegend in Mischungen verarbeitet wird.
